Top 5 Celeb Hair Styles

I have longish hair – and try as I may, I can never seem to get a decent updo…or ponytail, or bun – course, I don’t have a personal stylist…but I’ve tried to take the advice of websites, magazine tipsters and salon experts, but alas, instead of the “tousled” look, I just end up looking messy…so I’m always impressed when I see these simple updo’s, with a little twist to them. Here is my pick for the top (and bottom) celeb updo’s

Gurl Power!

I was watching this group of carolers a few weeks ago, singing out, loud and proud. They were under 12. It reminded me of a time before self-consciousness, before I cared what other people thought, before boys, before…hormones. I was prepubescent…and… brave.

As I got just a little older though, something changed suddenly. I became afraid… deeply afraid. The apologies came (more for taking up space in the world in retrospect, than anything I did wrong), more self, no HYPER-self awareness – basically worried about “falling down” and being laughed at or ostracized (not that that would have helped, I was already pretty out there so let’s say, not fit in in my case).

Turning 45

I turn 45 today, and a few things have been popping up for me. One of which is that every other year I can remember, I’ve looked forward to turning that next age. I’m the one always announcing, when people ask, I’ll BE 45 this year. Now, it’s not that this year is a big exception, but I have noticed a bit of an internal dialogue going on. I hear myself thinking, “hmmm I’m actually halfway to 50…50! That’s a whole ‘nother world! You know, you better start getting your act together…make that bucket list and get on it!”…stuff kinda like that. And at the top of my list, is as always…be happier with myself, be more confident, care less about other people’s opinions…the “inner strength” category. I don’t give these silly “I’m turning 50” thoughts much power or weight. What I am doing though is realizing that life truly is short and yep, it’s high time indeed, make a list of what I truly want the rest of my life to look like, to set my priorities and follow through making them happen because I know with all my heart that clear, detailed thoughts (matched with intensely hard work and dedication) make everything and anything possible. I also never want to wake up one day with regrets or to find that life just happened to me and that has colored many of my big decisions, including starting my company.

In any case, on the topic of confidence and inner strength, I’d like to share this poem I’ve loved since I saw the movie, “For Colored Girls,” which was incredible and had so much great writing in it.
