Mellow Yellow My Butt!

People who hung out in a yellow room were more active and energetic than other rooms. Yellow is the color of sunshine. And we all know what sunshine enables…LIFE! ENERGY! JOY! HAPPINESS!

Yellow is cheerful, it’s stimulating, it’s an attention getter, and not the pale yellow kind, the bright kind…(it’s no accident it’s taxicab yellow)

But when overused, yellow may have a disturbing effect, I mean let us not forget, it has been connected to cowardice and they say babies cry more in yellow rooms so be careful not to overuse the color.

If you’re considering it as a corporate outfit, I’ll tell ya, it’s said that men usually perceive yellow as a very lighthearted, ‘childish’ color, I wouldn’t buy a powersuit in a yellow tone…or your next Mercedes…do they even make those?

But if you’re a creative professional, go ahead and sport a yellow shirt or pair of shoes even (that would be ballsy) cause it’s viewed as a spontaneous color.

Now onto Purple or Lavender

Which combines the stability of blue with the energy of red.

If you need a boost of power, a sense of luxury, or some added punch behind that noble ambition of yours today, wear some purple! It’s associated with royalty, symbolizing all these things including wealth and extravagance. It has also been traditionally associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.

Purple is a very rare color in nature, evoking strong romantic and nostalgic feelings.

Odd to me that a color should bring out both ends of the spectrum…but hey…try on both lavender AND deep purple top to bottom and have the world at your royal, romantic head to feet!

Black…The Absence of Color

Today’s color is a NON color!

The LBD is a staple for a reason…it WORKS!

Black is the “color” associated with elegance, prestige, formality, and on the other hand, power, death, evil, and mystery.

Black can create a sense of fear (black death), the unknown (black holes), perhaps a negative connotation (blacklist, black humor), in advertising, strength and authority (black tie, black Mercedes) and in heraldry, the symbol of grief (mirrors covered in black).

Cover yourself in black though, and you have the world at your feet, or on your back. You can offer a feeling of perspective and depth, you can make yourself immediately look thinner. You can use black to make bold accessories stand out, and hey, it goes with everything – I mean, there’s a reason most people take a look in their closets and see a sea of darkness.

The Winter Blahs – Red

At no other time than winter do these words I read in a recent More Magazine ring any truer: “As far as I’m concerned, the most obnoxious pairing of words in the English language is the phrase ‘good morning.’ Separately, each word is fine, but say them together while I’m still in bed and you can expect a pillow flung at your head along with some heartfelt epithets!”

My sentiments exactly…and actually this is quite mild compared to my morning rantings.

So in that vein, I thought I’d offer some “color analysis,” this week. Some ways to punch up an otherwise blah winter morning with some mood-altering fashion enhancements, and on Friday, just a little something to make you smile, I hope…
Gosh, it really just started getting wintery, so truly, eh, it’s gonna be seriously blah unless we exorcise the cold weather, early darkness demons from our beings quick!
And ok, I’ll admit that I too, do in fact get woken up with the words “Good Morning!” and that they are quickly followed by the words, “I love you!”

I have longish hair – and try as I may, I can never seem to get a decent updo…or ponytail, or bun – course, I don’t have a personal stylist…but I’ve tried to take the advice of websites, magazine tipsters and salon experts, but alas, instead of the “tousled” look, I just end up looking messy…so I’m always impressed when I see these simple updo’s, with a little twist to them. Gurl Power!

I was watching this group of carolers a few weeks ago, singing out, loud and proud. They were under 12. It reminded me of a time before self-consciousness, before I cared what other people thought, before boys, before…hormones. I was prepubescent…and… brave.

As I got just a little older though, something changed suddenly. I became afraid… deeply afraid. The apologies came (more for taking up space in the world in retrospect, than anything I did wrong), more self, no HYPER-self awareness – basically worried about “falling down” and being laughed at or ostracized (not that that would have helped, I was already pretty out there so let’s say, not fit in in my case).
